TREE

Top

There were bits of rain left on the window, and they shone with gold and silver and blue. Amir could hardly look at them. All the garden was so bright. The sky was blue like the water at the swimming bath, and it waved gently. The grass had diamonds all over it, and white light came out of them. Sometimes the light had pink and blue spots in it.

The tree at the end of the garden looked taller than ever. The only way you could see most of the sky was through its branches. They moved - or was it the sky that waved? There was a rainbow in the branches. It bent up one side, through the top of the branches, and then it went down the other side. The tree was solid gold. It looked as though all the light in the garden was coming out of the tree. Amir looked for shadows, but there weren't any.

He looked to see if his family had noticed, but the television was on. They sat in the dark, bent over. The light from the television flashed on their faces.

The tree was now in the middle of the lawn. You couldn't see the top of it any more. You could see the bit where Amir had tried to climb it, and the branch had broken off. You could see his name, AMOR, which he had cut with a knife. The letters were not very neat, but they looked lovely and shiny now. Amir rubbed his eyes. He could see the light through his eyelids, still. The tree appeared in his closed eyes: bright green, like old metal. He could taste it.

The tree was touching the window. You couldn't see the top half at all, now. The trunk went right across the window, and you could only see a bit of the garden round the sides. It really was solid gold. The cracks in the bark were glittering all through. The leaves on the bottom branches were yellow metal too, and they moved to and fro very softly. There was a golden bird on the branch, and it opened two very small wings and floated up and up, then Amir couldn't see it any more.

Amir opened the window. He looked at his family. They were still flickering; he could see their backs. He stood on the windowsill and looked again. Nothing had moved. He shut the window. The tree smelled of flowers, chocolate cake and strawberries. You could reach more branches from this high windowsill.

From half way up the tree, the ground looked misty and far away. It was in a cloud. Just the top of the house roof poked through. It had red tiles, like a toy house. It was very quiet. The wind was kind and warm. The colours from the rainbow were on him now: he had one blue leg and one green one. He looked up.

The top branches were very thin. They moved, and Amir moved, and so did the little bird. The rainbow colours and the gold were all mixed up and swirling about. There was lovely singing: a very high sound indeed. Amir didn't know who was singing: himself or the bird.
